Acquiring images

I load an image but I don’t see anything.

Make sure the Page Image is visible. Catch and move a splitter bar to decrease the size of the Text Editor or Document Manager display. Check in the View menu that Page Image is selected. Be sure the page was not facing the wrong way in the scanner. Check the size of the image file.

I scanned some photos, but they appear sideways or upside down.

Use the rotation buttons in the Image toolbar to correct the images. If you need to scan more photos, open the Process panel of the Options dialog box and select the desired page rotation value instead of ‘Automatic’. OmniPage may have interpreted something in the photo as lines of text and auto-rotated the image accordingly.

Pages in the document do not appear in the correct order.

You can easily reorder pages by dragging and dropping thumbnails. Use the Advanced button in the Load File dialog box to have image files loaded in a precise order. When scanning double-sided documents from the ADF of a duplex scanner, do not turn on the double-sided scanning option in OmniPage, but use the scanner’s own facility for handling double-sided documents.

My ADF has a limited capacity. I have to refill it to scan a long document, but I have no way of restarting the scanning.

Open the Process panel of the Options dialog box and select Automatically prompt for more pages. Then you will see a dialog box whenever the ADF or the file list is empty, allowing you to add pages or declare that all images for the document have been acquired.

I want to use the OmniPage Agent Omnipage icon taskbar Specific troubleshooting solutions to acquire images for workflow processing, but it does not appear on my taskbar as expected.

Go to Tools / Options / General  and enable the Agent.

Image handling

Some zoning or image handling tools have disappeared.

The image toolbar contains single tools and three sets of tools: for zoning, image rotation and table handling. Click the active tool of the group to see the other tools. These groups can be undocked and moved into the working area to be close at hand. You can redock the group when you no longer need it. But if you close the group – by intention or by accident – they are no longer visible. To restore them go to View/Toolbars and select the missing items. You can also hide or show the whole Image toolbar.

I cannot draw a process or an ignore zone.

Process zones can only be drawn on an ignore background, and ignore zones can only be drawn on a process background. When an image enters the image panel it has a process background. If you draw a manual zone, an ignore background is placed.

Manual processing

When I do manual processing, I get all pages recognized when I wanted only the current page.

Go to Tools > Options > Process and de-select Automatically select all manually loaded pages.

After using the SET tools, the program seems to freeze.

You may have not closed the SET window, but minimized it. Processing cannot continue until this window is closed.

Document Manager

I cannot read the column titles properly.

Move the cursor into the title bar at the top of the table. When it reaches a divider between two columns it becomes a two-headed arrow. Drag the divider to give the column more width and see this whole title. Use the appropriate item in the View menu to customize the columns and their order.

Editing text

All the text formatting menu items are grayed.

Make sure the Text Editor is active. In Plain Text formatting level, many of these menu items and buttons in the Formatting toolbar are not available. Choose a different formatting level with the buttons on the bottom left of the Editor.

I changed to “Plain Text” to make editing easier, and all the colors, bolds and italics disappeared.

Plain Text does not support these attributes. Finish editing and switch back to a higher-level view. Colors and other formatting will return.

I received only part of the text from the page and it contains too many reject and meaningless characters.

Check that you do not have an unwanted zone template file loaded. Template zones are placed on all pages while a template file remains loaded — even in new documents. If zone borders cut through text, that is liable to yield unrecognizable and nonsense characters.

I do not see characters I need in the Character Map or the ribbon.

By default only two character sets are enabled – enough for the West European languages. Go to View/Character Map/Character Sets to enable other sets. Asian characters are not available.

I recognized pages in Korean, Japanese or Chinese, but I see only blank squares or incorrect characters in the Text Editor.

East Asian language handling must be installed in the operating system to view these languages. Go to the system Control Panel and enable this support under the Regional and Language Options. This may require access to the original OS disks. If your system is Asian-enabled, this problem may occur if text is set with a font that does not include Asian characters. Select the problem text and set Arial Unicode MS or any other Asian-enabled font.

I turned on Verify Language Choices in the OCR Options panel, but was not warned of a mismatch.

This feature is designed for use with Asian languages and can auto-detect three languages: Japanese, Chinese and Korean, with a fourth category: a non-Asian language. It warns if incoming texts conflict with the recognition language. It does not distinguish between non-Asian languages, so it will not report if French was set but a German document is scanned and sent to recognition.

I recognized pages with vertical text in Japanese or Chinese, but these appear horizontally in the Editor.

This is as designed. The vertical layout will be transmitted to the exported document, providing you set True Page or Flowing Page as the formatting level and export to a file type that supports vertical Asian text.

I click on a language in the OCR Options panel, but it does not become selected or de-selected.

The Detect single language automatically option may be on; this prevents manual selection of individual languages.

IntelliTrain

I have made corrections in recognized text but I do not see training data marked [unsaved] in the Training dialog box.

  1. You must make corrections in the Proofreader OCR dialog box. Changes made with the verifier in the Text Editor do not contribute to training data.

  2. IntelliTrain must be turned on in the Proofing pa
nel of the Options dialog box.

  3. Not all proofing changes generate training data.

Form creation in OmniPage Professional

I do not see the Form Drawing and Form Arrangement toolbars at all.

Choose Toolbars from the View menu and select the checkboxes for the two form toolbars.

All my form drawing tools are grayed.

Check that the Text Editor is the active window. The form tools are available only if the page was recognized with Form as layout description, or the cursor is inside an area corresponding to a form zone. Some form arrangement buttons require two or more form controls to be selected.

I cannot edit the form elements in the Text Editor.

Form elements can be viewed and edited only in True Page.

My forms are not fillable after saving.

Use one of the following file types: PDF, RTF, HTML or XSN (Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 format) with the True Page formatting level.

Form data extraction in OmniPage Professional

Data was not extracted as expected.

Make sure your form template and all forms being processed have the same number of pages. This includes the effect of a page range (if set) in the template file.

Make sure the form controls on your form template reappear in the same places on all forms being scanned or processed.

View any error messages that appear during form processing.

Do not apply FDE to forms in Japanese, Chinese or Korean.

Saving documents

The password options are disabled when saving to PDF.

You must first select an encryption level. Passwords are only applied to PDF files that will be encrypted. When a recipient enters a correct password the file is decrypted and displayed.

I do not see the Kindle Document converter.

This is not supplied with the product. It is generated the first time you use the Kindle Assistant (Tools menu). From then on the converter can be chosen in a workflow export step or with Send in Mail. See Sending to Kindle.

The option ‘Create a new file at each blank page’ did not work

If the option ‘Skip blank pages’ is enabled as a process option, these pages cannot function as document separators. If the separation is not working well, adjust the sensitivity for blank page detection in the same panel.

Other

Some Help topics do not appear.

The HTML help system works through your internet explorer program. Inspect its security settings or upgrade it to a newer version.

The drop-down list for changing views has disappeared.

This list is on the Standard toolbar that is not displayed in Quick Convert View. Please use the Window menu to change views.
